Laser Hair Removal – Upper Lip – Women

Upper Lip Laser Hair Removal

It is a subject that can be difficult to talk about, and yet hair on the upper lip affects many women. Whether it is dark fuzz that catches the light or coarser hairs at the corners of the mouth, this hair can quickly make life miserable. It is the area of the face that people notice first when you smile or speak, which makes it one of the most frequent requests at our clinic.

Faced with this insecurity, it is very tempting to turn to quick fixes at home. Yet the upper lip tolerates repeated aggression very poorly. Tweezers and wax, by pulling out the hair, create a rush of blood that can stimulate dormant follicles and lead to heavier regrowth. The razor, for its part, eventually creates a prickly “stubble” effect that is very uncomfortable. Medical laser hair removal is the only alternative capable of destroying the hair at the root for the long term.

Why is the upper lip a unique area?

Treating the upper lip is unlike any other area of the body. Its particularity comes down to two main factors: skin sensitivity and the influence of hormones.

The skin there is extremely thin and full of small nerve endings, just below the nose. In addition, hair growth in this area is closely linked to the female hormonal system. This is why the treatment requires regularity: the hairs renew themselves on a very fast cycle. To successfully eliminate them, they must be targeted precisely when they are attached to their bulb (during their growth phase).

This is why sessions need to be carried out at regular intervals in order to be as effective and as fast as possible.

In practice: what does a session look like?

Record speed: This is the great advantage of this treatment. A laser session on the upper lip generally lasts less than 5 minutes. It is a “flash” treatment that is very easy to fit into your schedule.

The sensation: As the area is sensitive, the laser pulse can be surprising. You feel a sharp tingling, like the snap of a small warm elastic band. Fortunately, our latest-generation lasers simultaneously release a jet of cool air that immediately reduces the sensitivity of the skin, making the session entirely bearable.

The pace: Given the fast life cycle of facial hair, sessions are closer together at the start. You should plan for at least 8 to 10 sessions, spaced 4 weeks apart at the beginning. The interval becomes longer over time, as the hairs disappear.

Your frequently asked questions

+ - Can I hide the hairs between sessions?

Yes, but not in just any way. Throughout the protocol, you must forget about waxing, threading and tweezers, because the laser needs the hair root to be present in order to work. If the hairs bother you between two appointments, you can trim them very close to the skin with scissors.

+ - Can I have laser treatment if I have blond or very light fuzz on my lip?

Medical laser targets melanin (the dark pigment). If your hairs are very light, blond, red or white, the laser will have no effect on them. During the first consultation, the doctor will carefully examine your hair to tell you whether the treatment will be effective or whether another technique, such as electric hair removal (also called electrolysis), would be more suitable.

+ - What happens right after the session?

It is completely normal to see slight redness or mild swelling at the base of the hairs. It looks similar to what you see after waxing and disappears within a few hours. Simply apply a repairing, moisturising cream for 48 hours.

+ - The pitfall to avoid: the sun

The face is exposed to light all year round. This is the absolute golden rule: no sun for one month before and one month after the session. Treating tanned skin carries a risk of burns. In addition, sun exposure after the laser can cause brown spots to appear. Daily application of SPF 50+ sunscreen on the lip is therefore essential throughout your treatment. An initial medical consultation at the clinic will allow us to assess your skin type and plan your sessions in complete safety.
