Laser Hair Removal – Beard – Men

Beard Laser Hair Removal

Beard laser hair removal is an increasingly common treatment among men. Whether it is to reshape the contours for a perfectly neat beard without upkeep, to thin out hair that is too dense, or to treat painful skin problems, laser offers an effective and long-lasting solution. As the beard is an area under strong hormonal influence with particularly coarse hairs, its treatment follows very specific rules.

The different types of requests

Beard laser treatment does not necessarily mean completely clearing the face. There are three main approaches at a medical clinic:

  • Shaping the contours: This is the most frequent request. It involves permanently removing the hairs on the upper cheeks and the lower neck. This keeps the beard well groomed and eliminates the chore of shaving the surrounding areas every day.
  • Full beard treatment: For men who no longer wish to wear a beard or moustache at all, the laser gives a completely smooth face and eliminates the bluish “five o’clock shadow” effect under the skin.
  • Thinning: By reducing the number of sessions, it is possible to decrease the density of the beard to make it softer and easier to manage, without making it disappear.

Why does the beard respond so well to laser?

The beard is an ideal treatment area for medical laser. Male facial hairs are naturally thick, dark and very rich in melanin (the pigment that absorbs light). The contrast with the facial skin, often less exposed or lighter at the hair root, allows the laser beam to deliver its energy optimally.

The heat generated destroys the hair root, also called the hair bulb, only during the growth phase. A major and immediate benefit of this treatment is the elimination of pseudofolliculitis barbae (ingrown hairs on the neck and cheeks). By destroying the root, the laser eliminates the bumps, inflammation and infections caused by hairs growing back under the skin.

Procedure, pace and sensations of the treatment

Session length: The treatment is quick. Allow about 10 to 15 minutes for the contours and up to 25 minutes for a full beard.

The sensation: As the beard is a dense area with thick hairs and well-innervated skin, the treatment is sensitive, particularly on the chin and upper lip. You feel a sharp, warm tingling. Our lasers have an air cooling system to numb the skin and reduce this discomfort. The doctor may also prescribe an anaesthetic cream to apply one hour before the appointment.

Number of sessions: Because of the high level of testosterone, male facial hairs are resistant. A full protocol generally requires between 8 and 10 sessions, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart at the start. Annual maintenance sessions may be needed to stabilise the result over time.

Essential precautions (Before / After)

To guarantee the safety of the facial skin, several strict guidelines must be followed:

Shaving: The area to be treated must be closely shaved on the morning of the session or the day before. The hair must not protrude from the skin to prevent the energy from dispersing on the surface, which could cause burns. The use of tweezers or wax is forbidden between sessions.

The sun: This is the golden rule. The face must not be tanned at all (no sun exposure or tanning beds for 4 weeks beforehand). After the session, applying SPF 50+ sunscreen is mandatory to avoid pigmentation spots.

Immediate aftercare: Redness and slight swelling (perifollicular oedema) are normal and last 24 to 48 hours. Applying a moisturising, soothing cream is recommended. Intensive sport, sauna and hammam should be avoided for 24 hours.
